Job fair preparation

Here you can find a small guide on how to prepare yourself optimally for our CONTACT2017 job fair. This guide will provide tricks on how to make a good impression on potential new employers and what to do before you visit the job fair.

If you need additional help, you can also participate in our job fair preparation courses. Please note, that they are only available in German this year. A list of this year’s courses and the registration can be found here.

The perfect preparation

Our CONTACT2017 website and the fair catalogue provide you with information on the participating companies. You can use our detailed profiles of these companies to find out important facts about them or use the provided links to check their websites and social media channels.

Before you approach a company representative, you should think about what you expect from this conversation. Do you want to get to know the company’s philosophy? Do you want to write a graduation thesis? Or do you want to perform an internship? Your preparation for your conversation should match your goals.

Choosing the perfect company

The best way to achieve your goals for this job fair is to write a priority list of your five preferred companies. By starting with the least interesting one and “chating” your way up, you’ll have perfect practice for your number one enterprise. With this strategy you’ll get a feeling on what to expect, how to answer certain questions, and also what you should ask in return.

To rock this interview, you should research your preferred companies in advance! Find out about their present financial situation, which new products they will launch and if their mantras match your own values. You can check our company profiles, their websites or even some business journals to get a detailed impression.

The perfect job fair day

Bring at least the matching number of CVs to the job fair than of companies you’re interested in and want to approach. It also makes a good impression, when you find out the correct contact person of the respective companies and directly address this person in your cover letter. The application files are your portfolio during the job fair and you should prepare them as professionally as possible.

We recommend business-casual outfits for our job fair. This mixture of easy-going and professional appearance will make you feel comfortable but at the same time it will fit well to the occasion. Men should wear a shirt in quiet colors and women should grab a nice blouse to dress up. You could combine this with cotton or chino trousers, women might also choose knee-length skirts.

The perfect topics for a conversation

Look for an available company representative and introduce yourself with your name, education and your concerns. Be enthusiastic about their company and try to avoid empty phrases. Try and steer the conversation to your previous experiences, which might be relevant for the company. Also ask questions! Asking a smart question at the right time point will give you some extra points.

The perfect follow up

After each conversation, note down what you can recall about the company and your personal impression. Also try to remember how the conversation ended. Did you promise to send some extra documents or that you will call them? If you were lucky and obtained personal contact information of the company representative, use it and send an e-mail expressing how interesting the chat was and how you would like to stay in contact. If you don’t get an answer within a couple of weeks, you may also call them.

Good luck!
